Which Materials are Used for Making an Aircraft Exhaust Nozzle?

In most modern aircraft, gas turbine engines are generally used. These engines are located either under the wings or the tail of the aircraft. It is the part responsible for propelling the aircraft forward. Because of the tremendous amount of energy these parts have to endure, the materials need to be able to withstand high temperature and pressure.  

Although gas turbine engines can have different types, they always have common parts such as the fan, compressor, turbine, combustor, and exhaust nozzle. Each of these parts plays a specific role in the engine system. Among these parts, one part usually receives less attention – the exhaust nozzle. The nozzle is shaped like a tube through which outgoing hot gases flow. The function of the nozzle is to produce the thrust that helps the aircraft maintain speed. Inconel is one of the most commonly used materials for exhaust nozzles. This material is a nickel-chromium alloy which is classified as a superalloy. What is amazing about this material is its resistance to extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold. It is used even in rocket ships because of its qualities such as oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance. Not only is it used in aircraft, but it is also the first choice for many sea vessels because it can withstand prolonged exposure to saltwater.  

Stainless steel alloys 

These refer to steels that have at least 10% chromium. Not all stainless-steel alloys are the same. Further, not all are created equal because they do not have the same functions. They are classified based on their composition. Some have more elements, such as nickel and chromium than others.  

The three main classifications are austenitic, ferritic, and martensitic. For instance, austenitic alloys are made of carbon, chromium, and nickel. It is highly resistant to extreme temperatures. Aircraft actually use super austenitic stainless steel. This type is developed to have more nickel and chromium to make it more corrosion resistant.  


The demand for titanium is constantly rising. Companies such as AirBus and Boeing manufacture their newer planes using this element. Titanium has high tensile strength to density ratio. It is corrosion-resistant and can withstand high temperatures.  Almost all new aircraft, sea vessels are reliant to titanium now. Due to the high demand for this material, the purchase of this element is regulated in the United States.
